TrainingIn 1994 BSCNZ established an Industry Training Organisation with the aim of improving the quality of industry training. The industry accepted that whilst many reputable companies did, in fact, train their staff there was a need to broaden access to formal training and to standardise outcomes. There are currently over 300 people in training. Over 1000 National certificates have been completed since the ITO's inception. Many more of the trainees are on the brink of completing their qualification. To date Building Service Contractors Industry Training Organisation (BSCITO) has developed three stages of qualifications for the cleaning industry. The National Certificate in Cleaning and Caretaking Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. The jobs that cleaners do are divided into separate tasks called unit standards. Each unit standard sets out performance criteria which cleaners must demonstrate in order to be assessed as competent. Training is undertaken on the job. Subsequently registered assessors, with experience in the industry, check to see that they have properly learnt the skill required for each unit standard. Once the necessary units have been passed the cleaner qualifies for a nationally recognised certificate. For your information we include the Charter and the Profile for 2005-2007 of the BSCITO.
